RQ breathing test ยท St. Louis

RQ resting metabolic rate test

The RQ test is a relaxed breathing test. It tracks the calories your body burns at rest and reveals whether it leans on sugar or fat for fuel. We use the result to set the eating plan that supports a joint or tendon before and after orthobiologic care.

Your physician orders this test when the result will change your plan. You have it only if it is ordered for you.

What is RQ (resting metabolic rate)?

You sit still and breathe as usual through a mask or mouthpiece as the device reads your breath.

What does it tell your physician?

Knowing your resting burn and main fuel lets us set the food plan we coach at each physiotherapy visit.

What does it feel like?

Quiet, normal breathing. Nothing goes through the skin.

How do you get ready?

For about 4 hours before the test, skip food, workouts, caffeine and nicotine.

What should you tell us first?

  • Speak up if breathing through a mouthpiece is a struggle for you

How long does it take?

About 15 to 20 minutes.

What to remember

  1. Fast for about 4 hours first, and skip workouts, caffeine and nicotine too.
  2. It reveals if your body leans on sugar or on fat for fuel.
  3. Your result shapes your eating plan.

Show us you have it: Say when your last meal before the test will be. Anything still unclear? Ask, and we will go over it with you again.

Other tests in the program

It belongs to the physiotherapy program for PRP and joint care at PRP STL. A physician orders and watches over every treatment, and nothing starts unless one can step in right away.
