Vibration therapy for knee, hip and ankle stability

For vibration therapy you hold the rails of a platform that buzzes gently under your feet. It gets the small stabilizing muscles around the knee, hip, ankle and spine firing again, which is why it is called neuromuscular re-education.

Your physician orders this treatment and sets its strength. You receive it only when it is written on your orders.

What is vibration platform?

You stand on a vibrating platform with your knees slightly bent and your hands on the rails. Your technician watches your posture and balance from start to finish.

How does it help a joint or tendon?

After an injury or a long stretch of joint pain, the small muscles that steady a joint tend to go quiet, and bigger muscles stiffen to make up for them. The vibration prompts those small muscles to work again, so a treated joint is better supported as it heals.

What does it feel like?

A quick, light buzz through your feet and legs. Keep your knees soft. You can step off whenever you want.

One-on-one. Your technician stays beside you for the full treatment and records the exact start and stop times.

Who should not have it?

  • Pregnancy
  • A pacemaker or another implanted device
  • A leg blood clot, a fresh fracture or a recent operation
  • A history of seizures
  • Recent eye surgery or a retina problem
  • Kidney stones or gallstones
  • Feeling dizzy or unsteady that day

At the start of each visit your technician reads the safety questions aloud. If something has changed, the physician makes the call before anything starts. You may ask to stop at any point.

How long does it take?

About 10 minutes, broken into short rounds with rests.

What to remember

  1. Soft knees, hands on the rails.
  2. It retrains the small muscles that steady a joint.
  3. Dizzy means stop and tell us.

Show us you have it: Before the platform starts, show us how you stand on it. Anything still unclear? Ask, and we will go over it with you again.

Other treatments in the program

It belongs to the physiotherapy program for PRP and joint care at PRP STL. A physician orders and watches over every treatment, and nothing starts unless one can step in right away.

Ask whether this belongs in your plan

Your physician looks at the joint or tendon, your metabolic health and what you have already tried, then builds the plan around you. Book an evaluation or get the free guide.
